My fascination with Graff watches began a while ago when I first saw their diamond-shrouded timepieces. These watches are as rare as a Graff boutique. Or perhaps this is just my untraveled observation as I have only seen Graff locations in Las Vegas, and aside from the rarest of places you never hear about Graff timepieces. Leave it up to me to share the news with you when they release “interesting” new models. For 2010 comes this new Graff MasterGraff Tourbillon watch. An intentionally redundant name meant to remind you what you are wearing on your wrist. It is sad to say that even though the watch has a complex mechanical movement, it is essentially a vehicle for delivering Graff diamonds on your wrist. This men’s watch doesn’t have an incredible number of diamonds on it, but rather it has very large diamonds. Over 35 carats all over the 47mm white gold case. The watch also comes in a 45m wide variant and of course in versions with the same movement with less diamonds.
Diamonds are all over the watch. 24 massive stones line the bezel while the dial is full of diamonds (and two triangular-cut emeralds). There are more stones on the buckle of the black crocodile bracelet, and even “hidden” diamonds on the rotor and some parts of the movement that are visible through the sapphire case back window. Graff provides only scant details about the movement (although it does come in a manual wound or automatic form. The functions however are clear. It has the time, a dial display for the date, a retrograde GMT hand, and a one-minute tourbillon that doubles as a subsidiary seconds dial. To be perfectly honest, having a retrograde GMT hand is a bit counterproductive as it just makes an otherwise useful complication less useful, and harder to read. While the twelve-sided face is oriented in a way that makes reading the hours difficult (your mind wants the points to be the hour markers but they are not), Graff does place more emerald stones on the flange to help read the time.
As exclusive as Graff is, I find it interesting that the dial bears no brand logo. Surely the back of the case will mention the name of the maker, but perhaps owners of the watch will want to feel that the jewellery watch piece was made especially for them. This is pretty close to the truth as the Graff MasterGraff Tourbillon watch will come in a limited edition of just five pieces. Price is unimaginable, and despite how silly the concept is, it is hard not to want one.
